CELEBRATIONS were on show all around at Teignmouth Golf Club on Saturday, February 22, as the sun eventually shone, and members welcomed their new captains for 2025.
James Mayne, Natasha Waggett, John Dabin and Susie Carr are the new quartet and they led a field of 110 members in a shotgun start Florida Scramble followed by the traditional Captains' Drive-in.
The team of Alan David Plunkett, Sarah Plunkett, Anthony Stephens & Hannah Stephens prevailed in the Florida Scramble with a Nett score of 57, edging out Phillip Heales, Glenn Robbins, Rae Stinton & Michael Widdowson only on countback.
Completing the podium was the team of Susie Carr, John Dabin, James N Mayne & Natasha Waggett, with a Nett 58.
After the golf and a well-deserved lunch, players, members and friends were delighted to hear that the coming year's captains' charities would be Devon Air Ambulance and Children's Hospice SW with funds already being raised by guessing the length of the following Captain's drives.
The high point of the day was the drive-in, as each new Captain successfully tested their skill with a traditional hickory driver, and the measured distance revealed the winning guesses.
Junior captain Susie sent her drive 157 yards away which was guessed by Lin King, ladies’ captain Natasha Waggett hit her drive 99 yards which was guessed by Sue Jago, senior’s captain John Dabin’s drive of 118 yards was guessed by Nick James and Alan Plunkett successfully guessed that men’s captain James Mayne would drive a distance of 69 yards.
Luke Radford guessed the total yardage of 443 yards.
Great fun was had by all on the day and now to enjoy a good year of golf under the new captains!
