STUDENTS, staff and families at the South Devon University Technical College (SDUTC) in Newton Abbot, part of Education South West, have been donating items to a local food bank.
Science teacher Rob Barnard has been organising donations since October and the school has collected an impressive amount to support Teignbridge Homeless Action Today (THAT).
THAT food bank was set up in 2011, initially to address the needs of rough sleepers but, at the request of social services and the local council, it soon developed into a much needed food bank.
They aim to offer a friendly, non-judgemental and positive welcome to people in financial difficulty in Teignbridge.
This charitable drive has been a staple of the UTC in the run up to Christmas over the last few years and the students enjoy supporting their community through donating. This year the UTC also introduced a competition element, in which Year 12 and 13 students bought as many items as they could with £5.
This led to some impressive hauls, whilst also teaching them money management and budgeting skills, helping to prepare them for life beyond education.
Claire Plumb, Headteacher at South Devon UTC, said: ‘It’s been fantastic to see the enthusiasm from our students and staff for supporting the local community.
‘The generosity we've witnessed really highlights the caring nature of our school, and it’s wonderful to know our contributions will make a real difference to those in need this Christmas.’
Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said: ‘At Education South West, we’re incredibly proud of the way our schools engage with and support their local communities.
‘The SDUTC’s food bank donation drive is a perfect example of how our students are not only learning essential life skills, but also showing true compassion and generosity during the festive season.’
