A SECTION of Queen Street will be closed from tomorrow, Monday, August 12.
The section of road between Albany Street and Courtenay Street is to close to allow for work to be undertaken on the northern end of Queen Street.
Devon County Council’s interactive roadworks map gives the estimated end date at October 11.
The closure is the latest step of the controversial project to ‘enhance’ Queen Street.
During this phase of works, pedestrians will continue to be able to walk along Queen Street as usual to visit shops and businesses.
A diversion will be in place for motorists.
Once completed, this section of road will be reopened to buses and cycles, as well as taxis and blue badge holders to enable passengers to be picked up or dropped off along the full length of Queen Street.
General traffic will still be able to access Queen Street from the eastern end, though the everyday motorist will then be routed north on Albany Street.
Though, with no physical barrier or ANPR camera of any kind included in the work, it is not entirely clear what will stop drivers from using Queen Street as normal when the project is finished.
The police do not have the resources to enforce the Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO), or, at the very least, they didn't at the time of the TRO consultation when the then local inspector said as much.
