OYEZ, Oyez it’s the very first Kingsteignton Town Crier competition.
Criers from across the country will be heading to the town for the event on Saturday June 1.
Organised by Kingsteignton Town Council, the inaugural competition has been secured in the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers official Guild Competitions calendar.
Invitations have been issued to town criers all over the country.
A town council spokesman said: ‘We look forward to seeing many participating at our first competition.
‘The history of town criers is long and varied and as well as there being town competitions there are also competitions in different countries in addition to there being an international one.’
Jackie Edwards, Kingsteignton’s own town crier, will host the event.
Being the local town crier, she is not allowed to compete and will compere the event instead.
She will however perform a bench mark cry which is all themed about Kingsteignton, her home town. Jackie, who has performed the role of town crier for Kingsteignton as a volunteer for more than eight years, and says she is ‘thrilled' to welcome other competitors to her beloved town.
In the role, Jackie travels across the county competing in other competitions on behalf of Kingsteignton.
The competition will see those taking part being judged on their cries for clarity, diction, volume, inflection as well as their attire.
Participants must perform their hometown cry first and then the themed cry in the second round.
These cries must strictly be no longer than 125 words.
A spokesman said: ‘Kingsteignton Town Council is proud to host this event and invites everyone to come along and watch proceedings and support what they hope to be a new and very successful event for the town.’
The competition will take place in the grounds of the Community Hall in Rydon Road, Kingsteignton, on Saturday June 1.
It will run from 10am to 1.30pm.
Spectators are welcome, refreshments will be available to buy and if the weather is dry seating will be available outside to see the action.
