TEIGNMOUTH'S new museum has been praised by one of the stars of a top rated TV archaeological programme.
Phil Harding, from the Channel 4 Time Team show, was one of the guests at the official opening of the £1.1 million Teign Heritage Centre.
In a light hearted speech, he described some 'uncomfortable' diving experiences on his first visit to Teignmouth when an old cannon was discovered just offshore many years ago.
His latest trip to the town was 'far more agreeable', especially as the centre was a fine example of what could be done in the interests of preserving the past.
The building was declared open by Tony Richardson, of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and he described it as a typical example of the sort of project it liked to support.
Colin Trigger, who masterminded the creation of the centre from concept to reality, outlined the nine years of hard work it took to complete.
The project consisted of renovating the existing museum and creating an adjoining, large new annexe, incorporating environmentally and disabled friendly features.
Since it was first open to the public in May, the museum has enjoyed record attendances and stages various events.
Modelled on a lighthouse, it is home to about 10,000 exhibits, some dating back 2,000 years, and others recording more recent events, such as the success of Teignmouth rock group Muse, and a visit by the Beatles.
More?than 70 people attended the ceremony on Saturday, which was followed by a buffet lunch and live music.
Cllr Jacqui Orme, whose office is at the nearby railway station, said she had followed the progress with interest from the start to fruition.
'Teignmouth should be justifiably proud of this iconic building, with its delightful community space, which we now have the opportunity to utilise,' she said.
