A ‘GUERILLA Gardener’ has been keeping the flock at a Newton Abbot church amused and informed during lockdown.
Each week of lockdown a mystery gardener left a decorative garden on the steps of St Mary’s Church in Wolborough.
At first the gardens combined live plants and Playmobil figures to depict the traditional Easter story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
Then the gardener began interpreting a Bible reading that would have been read in church that Sunday had it been open, including well loved pieces like Psalm 23, Joseph and his many coloured coat and the story of the sower.
Church members were pleased and intrigued by this activity and photos of the gardens were liked and shared on social media.
A member of the PCC said: ‘Wolborough Hill and the church grounds became a very popular walk during lockdown. People saw it as a place of peace, and these gardens certainly showed that although the doors were shut the church was still active.’
