THE Met Office is warning of heavy rain this weekend as a town council says its Christmas light switch-on event maybe cancelled.

Newton Abbot Town Council (NATC) has said that ‘depending on the weather conditions’ its popular Christmas event could be cancelled.

This comes as the Met Office is forecasting heavy rain on Saturday, November 23.

Across the South West, rain is expected to develop during Saturday morning with heavier rain likely later in the day and overnight into early Sunday morning, the Met Office has said.

Between 50 and 75 millimetres of rain is expected to fall, with a chance that some places over Dartmoor could see as much as 125 millimetres.

Strong winds are expected to accompany the heavy rain.

NATC will be posting updates on its Facebook page.
