A GROUP of staff from Dawlish Community Hospital will be taking part in a sponsored walk in memory of a colleague’s late husband.
The hospital team is raising money for the RNLI after the death of crew member Andy Burry who died this summer from heart disease.
Andy’s widow Charlotte was a well-loved physiotherapist for many years at the hospital.
Healthcare assistant Kevin Matthews, who is part of the group, explained: ‘We all knew Andy and were deeply saddened by his passing.
‘He was such an amazing chap and we wanted to do something for his memory and support Charlotte.’
In August, hospital staff took part in the Race For Life and their is now a hospital running club.
The hospital team’s eight mile walk will be from Teignmouth to Torquay along the coastal path.
Before that, they plan to complete the Teignmouth Parkrun event which all the team try to take part in when their shifts allow.
The walk will leave Teignmouth Lifeboat Station on Saturday November 30 at 10am.
Collection buckets have been provided by the RNLI so they can raise more money along the way.
The latest fund raiser was the idea of deputy ward matron Helen Thatcher.
So far, £500 has been pledged and donated.
Andy spent his working life with the Navy and since retirement, had many interests including volunteering for the RNLI where he was a rescue boat launcher.
Helen’s Just Giving page says: ‘Too many people are still drowning. More than ever we need the RNLI’s help.
‘As a charity, the RNLI depends on our donations so it can go on saving lives and keeping us and our loved ones safe.’
