Rugby – Devon Two

SALCOMBE 17pts, BUCKFASTLEIGH RAMBLERS 22

On the back of the win against Newton Abbot Vets last week, all Ramblers were keen to make the team for the away league match against Salcombe.

Always a well competed match between the two teams, it was Ramblers that hit the ground running with Ryan Currie scoring a try seven minutes in.

Greg Robinson had a great run 20 minutes in, his experience giving him the composure to chip the ball and put down over the line. Ten minutes later, Salcombe intercepted and got on the scoreboard. But five minutes later Matt Wrayford stormed over the line. No conversions went over, so half-time score was 5 - 15.

Second half it was Salcombe that were first to score, just a couple of minutes in with a try and conversion. Ramblers seemed to have lost their momentum for a little while and Salcombe went over again 12 minutes later, putting them just two points ahead.

With ten minutes remaining Ryan Wolke passed off to Harry Laity who sprinted to the line, also kicking the conversion. After a very tense last few minutes where it really could have gone either way it was Ramblers that won the day 17 - 22.

Prop George Lowrey had a great 80-minute game showing how much his fitness has improved. Vice captain Tim Wigley led a devoted team, making good decisions and keeping discipline throughout.

Coach Tony Wolke was delighted with the whole team: ‘Scrums and line outs set a platform for the backs to run and the hard work in training on the technical aspects of the game is starting to show in how we play.’

It was impossible to single out any player in what truly was a team win and Man of the Match was awarded to the whole team.

Tomorrow, Ramblers travel to Plymouth to face OPM in the first game of Devon Junior Cup.
