OKEHAMPTON RFC starting the scoring on their home patch, when Teignmouth lost their own lineout and then Okehampton gained an advantage, writes Judi Hellier. They chose to kick for the posts, 3-0.
Teignmouth were quick to respond though and brothers Dan and Jake Allison were at the heart of it, the former scoring off of a maul to put his team ahead.
Lineouts continued to be the order of the day and when two from Oke led to a lead, they cashed in and scored the first converted try of the match for a 10-5 lead.
Dan Allison was on hand to round out a great bit of teamwork from the visitors, a second try of the afternoon for the prop and for Teignmouth. Fullback Mayne slotted the conversion, 10-12.
Possession went back and forth between the two teams, both of who were in interesting positions with Teignmouth towards the bottom of the table and Okehampton struggling with injury and availability headaches.
Teigns did well to deny Oke another try and were able to escape the danger zone, working the way into the opposite 22. A successful lineout set up a third try for who else but D. Allison, Mayne making the conversion again for a score of 10-19 at the break.
A Mayne penalty kick extended Teignmouth’s lead on their travels and they went further ahead courtesy of a score from second-row Hayward- this fourth try securing a bonus point. Mayne’s kick was good for a 19-point advantage.
Okehampton hit back with a try of their own after Teignmouth were reduced to 14-men but the away side were able to show great handling skills to help see out the game, another Oke score serving as a consolation as they fell to a 20-29 scoreline.
Unsurprisingly, the hat-trick hero was named as man of the match, Colin Stewart talking about Dan Allison after the game, he: "Scored a hat trick, defended aggressively all day, carried extremely well in the loose, strong in his one-man lifts at defensive lineout time in which we stole probably five or six of their lineouts and was a rock at Scrum time."
Back in Teignmouth, the two respective 2nd XVs were squaring off in a reverse fixture and the away team won this one as well.
After a torrential night of rain, the volunteers at Teignmouth RFC got out the forks and buckets and drained the pitch enough for the 2nd XV to take on Okehampton, in what turned out to be one of the best games played at Bitton Park this season, writes Nicola Skelley.
Even with a number of former colts absent, Director of Rugby Marcus Webb was able to name a squad of 20 for the first time in a number of weeks.
Both in attack and defence, the Teigns took the game to their opponents and after a drive within the 5m area, Louis Walker dived over to give the lead to Teignmouth.
The Teigns led 5-0 at half-time but Okehampton brought on a number of fresh, heavy forwards and began to dominate in the scrum enabling them to take the lead and build on it.
Player of the match Will Annal gave the Teigns a lift, but it was too late in the game to exploit further and Okehampton took the points from a pulsating game. Final score was 10-19.
