SNOW and rain have already fallen across a lot of Devon and so who knows if any of this weekend’s football will even go ahead.
In the event that it does, the Mid-Devon Advertiser has you covered for both the pre-game and post-game news, including a bumper clash at The Rec from the South West Peninsula League.
Newton Abbot Spurs currently sit fourth in the SWPL Premier East on 31 points, seven less than the top four. Leaders Sidmouth Town have played two more games than Spurs though and second-placed Cullompton Rangers five more, so this gap could easily disappear in the not-so-distant future.
The third and final team ahead of Spurs currently are Okehampton Argyle and Kevin Squire’s men will make the trip to Newton Abbot on Saturday, all being well.
These two teams went toe-to-toe just a couple of weeks ago with Argyle prevailing 5-1 on home soil in the Devon St Luke’s Challenge Cup.
Marc Revell’s men will be keen to exact revenge on Okehampton and home advantage will be on their side as they look to do so. Spurs have won three consecutive games at The Rec, scoring three on each occasion and losing on twice there all season, so it really could go either way.
One of Spurs’ local rivals, Teignmouth AFC, don’t have a fixture, whilst the other, Bovey Tracey, will go on the road to Middlezoy Rovers.
This will be a matchup between 12th and 14th with Bovey just two places and five points ahead.
Middlezoy beat Teignmouth at the Ethan Berry Pavilion in September before losing there against Spurs, so they have a mixed record when welcoming Mid-Devon-based teams.
Moving over to the Western Football League now and after playing at Homers Heath three weekends in a row, Buckland Athletic’s next up comes at Fairfax Park, the home of Bridgwater United.
Buckland exited the Les Phillips Cup in the second round in midweek at the hands of Brixham AFC and with a record of 1-1-2 in November against very strong sides, Dan Hart will look to head back towards title-winning form in Somerset.
South Devon Football League action is the most likely to fall victim to the weather but there are some mouth-watering fixtures to keep an eye on if everything goes to plan.
Kingsteignton Athletic 1st XI will host Newton Abbot Spurs 2nd XI in a huge Premier Division derby and the pair are currently separated by a single point in the standings.
Also in the top flight, Chudleigh Athletic face South Hams opponents again with Totnes & Dartington travelling to Kate Brook this time around and for Newton Abbot 66 1st XI, it is a home battle against Buckfastleigh Rangers.
Buckland Athletic 2nd XI of Division One meet Brixham Town in the Devon Senior Cup whilst the Spurs 3rd XI, Bovey seconds and WBB go to war with Ivybridge Town 2nd XI, Paignton Villa and Plymouth Phoenix respectively, all in the league.
Other SDFL fixtures for Saturday include Newton Rovers vs East Allington in Division Two and Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police vs Ashburton and Elburton Villa vs Kingsteignton Athletic, both in Division Three.
