Coombeshead Academy student and rising BMX star Max Avery is jetting off to Azerbaijan today for the BMX World Championships.

The 12-year-old, who lives in Newton Abbot, qualified in Baku after finishing fourth in the overall UK national rankings.

The Decoy BMX Club member will represent GB in the 13-year-old male 20in BMX category – he has also qualified to compete in the 13-14-year-olds’ cruiser category.

Avery is one of 130 British riders travelling to Baku, with ages ranging from eight to 50-plus for the event which runs from June 4-9.

He is the only one from his GB age group to be competing.

Avery has fellow club riders Seamus Doherty, nine, from Totnes; Jack Bailey, nine, from Newton Abbot, and Emily Green, from Paignton – who returned from the USA last year with a world four plate – joining him in Azerbaijan.
