Richard Younger-Ross and Cllr David Cox write:
In response to the Conservative leader, Jeremy Christophers: the Morrisons missing millions leaflet we published, was because we believe Teignmouth should and needs to get its fair share of the Morrisons cash.
There was no mention of money for the Carlton Theatre in the council's pre-budget meetings. A last-minute insertion of £2.5 million into the final budget was the first most councillors knew of it. Even then there is a lot of confusion as to what this money is for and even conservative councillor Dave Matthews was unable to say at a public meeting in Teignmouth last week whether it was a new build or refurbishment.
Neither of us has claimed that the late insertion of some cash for Teignmouth was a direct result of our actions; however, we do believe that the anger of Teignmouth residents did change the Conservatives' proposals.
If that is not the case then I am sure the Conservative leader will make public the meeting notes and papers that show this.
It would help if the council was more open and transparent then we all know what was planned, even members of the Conservative leader's own councillor colleagues.
The real questions are first what is proposed for the seafront and theatre and when will we know and what consultation will there be?
And second what is proposed for the other £7.2 million? Teignmouth was promised a fair share of this windfall. are you going to deliver on it?MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
