TIME travel and a family-friendly day out in the countryside will be on offer at this year’s 88th annual Christow and District Horticultural and Agricultural Show on Saturday, August 19.
Making a return visit to the picturesque Teign Valley showground will be the Hildsvin Education Viking re-enactment group whose in-depth knowledge of the
Dark Ages and their blood-curling battle scenes wowed audiences in 2014.
Much more than a theatrical display, the Hildsvin team actually set up camp at the show and invite the public to explore the often misunderstood world of early medieval Britain.
‘Visitors to the Christow Show really will be able to sample a taste of Dark Ages Britain,’ said spokesman Nigel Canham.
‘The Vikings may be infamous for their ruthless warmongering but they also created tight-knit communities and were highly skilled artists, craftsmen and storytellers.’
Nigel added: ‘Although the show is predominantly about rural life in 21st century Devon, we’re delighted to offer show-goers a touch of time travel and don’t forget, the Teign Estuary and surrounding countryside was raided by Vikings so we’re still living with that legacy today.’
Other attractions at the show include show-jumping, donkey rides, terrier racing and a parade of vintage tractors.
Also in the show field will be children’s games and sports, classic cars, stalls, barbecues, beer tent, live music and refreshments.
The Teign Valley Community Hall will host entries in the horticultural, cookery and craft competitions.
With activities running all day, the event is open from 9am and all proceeds will go to Parkinson’s UK
