A TOWN on the edge of Dartmoor has been named as one of the ‘Best Places to Live’ by a national newspaper.

Ashburton was among the settlements named in The Sunday Times Best Places to Live 2025.

Noting its past as the headquarters of the Monster Raving Loony Party, the newspaper’s judges said the historic town centre is a ‘colourful, atmospheric delight’ and that it has an ‘exceptional range of independent shops’.

‘Downsizers who flock here can spend their days yomping across the moor or wild swimming in the River Dart, and their evenings doing yoga or watching films in the cosy community cinema’ the judges said.

Ashburton was described as ‘surprisingly well connected’.
