THE 80th anniversary of D-Day is being marked across Teignbridge today with events marking the historic landings.
Beacons will be lit around the district in the evening.
In Dawlish, the home of celebrated D-Day piper Bill Millin, a day long programme of events starts at 7.45am on the Lawn with a bagpiper playing, following by the proclamation by town crier Bob Graham and the D-Day flag raised at the Piazza at 9am.
Events include displays from Dawlish Museum, poetry, singer Sandy Sparkle performing 1940s songs with the bells at St. Gregory’s Church ‘ringing out for peace’ at 6.30pm.
In Newton Abbot, the Flag of Peace will be flown at St Leonard’s Clock Tower at 9am followed by the town crier’s proclamations.
Events include laying a wreath at the War Memorial at 11am following by bell ringing at the Clock Tower and Highweek Church.
Beacons will be lit at Highweek, Wolborough and Buckland.
In Teignmouth, the Alice Cross Centre has a sausage and mash supper followed by a walk to the cenotaph for wreath laying and ‘shine a light for peace’.
In Bickington there is a memorial display and choir with beacon lighting, from 7pm.
Chudleigh Knighton will be lighting a Lamp of Peace at the war memorial at 9pm.
In Ogwell, events on the green include children’s poems, 1940s songs from Ogwell choir, and the parish council has organised a tribute reading, lighting of the beacon and music.
Ashburton has a parade at the war memorial at 6.30pm.
