HOMEYARDS Botanical Gardens in Shaldon is today celebrating the 40th anniversary of National Tree Week with an educational event involving children from Shaldon Primary School.
Youngsters will be planting 21 trees, donated by Devon Gardens Trust and supplied by Plants Direct SW near Kennford, to enhance the natural environment of the unique gardens set in the hillside of the village.
Cllr George Gribble, the Teignbridge spokesman for recreation and leisure, said: ‘This is another great opportunity for Shaldon schoolchildren to learn about the importance of trees in our environment, how to protect them and play a part in shaping the future of Homeyards.
‘Teignbridge wants people of all ages to enjoy the benefits of our wonderful parks, gardens and open spaces and we are delighted to support National Tree Week.’
Lisa Pash, the chairman of the Friends of Homeyards Botanical Gardens, added: ‘These trees will enhance the wonderful views from the Italian Garden area over the Teign estuary and Lyme Bay.
‘The Friends’ group is always looking for volunteers to muck in on our work days. Contact us on 01626 873562 or email shaldonbotanicals@ gmail.com.
Shaldon councillor Chris Clarance said he was delighted to hear any good news involving the Botanical Gardens.
‘The Friends of the Garden deserve this as they work extremely hard for this asset to our village.’
In August, Homeyards Botanical Gardens was granted £317,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £40,000 from Viridor Credits Environmental Company through the Landfill Communities Fund.
The funding will be vital in continuing the invaluable work around conservation and improvements to Homeyards, ensuring the gardens remain the focus point of life in the village well into the future.
Work will allow for the restoration of the garden’s castle, pathway improvements, a new kitchen and toilet with disabled access, the refurbishment of the Italianate garden, its stonework and rockeries, a new indoor space for community use and educational activities so people can learn about the garden’s history and horticulture.
