IT cost more than £1million to run Newton Abbot’s recycling centre last year, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has revealed.

The total cost of running Brunel Road Recycling Centre last year was £1,123,965, the FOI shows.

It was the costliest of the 19 recycling centres run by Devon County Council.

The second most expensive was Exton Road Recycling Centre, near Exeter, which cost the council £1,022,830 in the 2023/24 financial year.

The cost of running the Newton Abbot site was almost ten times that of the cheapest site, which was Maclins Quarry Recycling Centre, near South Molton, totalling £138,387.

Brunel Road Recycling Centre’s running cost was more than that of Totnes Recycling Centre and Sidmouth Recycling Centre combined.

The total bill for each site includes costs related to: waste recycling; recovery and disposal fees; waste haulage; staffing; management and site costs; rents and more.
