A DRUGS and weapons haul was seized by police from a hit and run car in a Newton Abbot back alley over the weekend.
Officers were called to a service lane behind The Avenue after an Audi A4 crashed into a parked Honda Civic.
The Audi, abandoned by the driver, was found to contain a quantity of tablets reckoned to be controlled drugs.
A cache of weapons – discovered with the pills during the early Saturday afternoon search – suggested they were used in connection with thefts and burglaries.
The examination of the vehicle, just after midday, was carried out under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Weapons seized were knives and tools which included a claw hammer, two box-cutting knives, an axe and an assortment of screwdrivers.
A police spokesman later revealed that a man in his 30s from Newton Abbot was arrested in connection with the vehicle, but he was subsequently released without charge.
The spokesman confirmed that the items found in the Audi were suspected of being used for going equipped to steal.
‘Inquiries continue – and officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information which could assist with their investigation,’ the spokesman added.
