THE main road through Newton Abbot could close for more than two months as the gas mains pipe is replaced.

The planned closure of East Street will allow Wales and West Utilities to replace the old, metallic gas mains pipes with close to 400 metres of plastic pipes.

Devon County Council’s interactive roadworks map shows the proposed start date to be September 2, with the estimated end date to be November 8.

It should be mentioned, however, that these dates are not set in stone.

The work could be completed prior to November 8.

The work will also involve the renew and or transfer of around 100 service pipes to adjacent premises.
