SOUTH Devon Railway Trust have submitted plans which include the construction of a new loco restoration shed, a new car park and associated landscaping.

The popular tourist attraction is celebrating over 50 years in preservation and attracts more than 90,000 visitors a year.

Its 500 volunteers preserve an important part of local and national heritage for the enjoyment of all.

The application states: ‘The proposals are intended to improve both the visitor attraction and the engineering works, improve traffic management and provide environmental and ecological enhancements as detailed in the accompanying documents and plans.’

Principal among the proposals is a new steel-framed restoration building. This would be sited across existing rail tracks near existing storage sheds and workshops to the north of the site. This building would ease pressure on the visitor accessible museum attractions and worker-only repair/production yards.

A field in the southern part of the site is currently used for overflow car parking up to 100 days a year. The proposals are for this to become a permanent car park. The formalised car park will have space for 215 vehicles.

This includes 15 disabled parking spaces to be located close to the Station and forecourt area. In addition, up to 20 spaces will have electric charging points
