AN elderly mare had to be rescued by firefighters after becoming trapped in a ditch.

The mare known as Mouse, pictured, managed to get herself stuck in a ditch, trapped on her side surrounded by thick bushes and trees.

The crew from Bovey Tracey Fire Station, alongside veterinarians from Moorland Veterinary Group, were called in to rescue Mouse on Wednesday, May 29.

Having assessed the scene, firefighters set about cutting away vegetation and removing a barbed wire fence from an adjacent field.

Mouse was sedated by the attending veterinarian while the crew waited for the arrival of the Specialist Rescue Team from Camels Head Fire Station.

Upon the team’s arrival, a plan was put together where it was decided special sheets and lines would be used to gently manoeuvre Mouse into a neighbouring pasture.

‘We are thrilled to hear that Mouse is up and about and on the road to recovery’ a spokesperson for Bovey Tracey Fire Station said.
