A VERY successful ‘Mass Unwrap’ was organised by Sustainable Bishop at Teignmouth’s Morrisons store.
Sustainable Bishop is a community group in Bishopsteignton.
The event, masterminded by environmental group Surfers Against Sewage, took place at supermarkets nationwide and was intended to show how much plastic is used by supermarkets and to put pressure on them from community level, to change. The aim was to visually show the sheer scale of single use plastic packaging and the need for change.
112,000 pieces of plastic are distributed every minute of every day worldwide and one marine mammal or bird is killed every 30 seconds due to plastic pollution. These are statistics that are shocking but everyne will have seen the plastic washed up on beaches and littering the roadside and that does not need to be there.
More than 15 volunteers explained to shoppers what was happening and then helped people unwrap the unnecessary plastic from their shopping, which was taken away by Morrisons to be recycled where possible.
