IN a hectic 24 hours Newton Abbot’s fire crews dealt with six incidents including a flat fire, a crash and ethanol leak.

After all that they still recorded the busy day on their Facebook page adding: ‘A busy day for our crews showing great effort and resilience demonstrated by all our firefighters as well as the other emergency services involved.’

‘A busy 24 hours for Newton Abbot fire station which saw both of our appliances mobilised to six different incidents between them.

‘Two of the larger incidents included a house fire and an RTC.

‘The RTC saw one of our appliances called out alongside Torquay fire station to just past Warebarton roundabout to reports of one vehicle that had collided with the nearside crash barrier.

‘Upon arrival the ‘olice informed crews that the driver was out of the vehicle and uninjured. ‘However, the barrier had sheared off and was in lane two. The car also had significant damage seeing the engine ripped from the vehicle and debris sent across the carriageway. ‘Crews used lighting and a variety of brooms and shovels to clean the road surface so the road could be reopened.

‘While the RTC was being dealt with by one of our crews, the second appliance from Newton Abbot was mobilised as part of a make pumps four assistance to Dawlish for a domestic flat fire.

‘Upon arrival of the first attending crew, smoke and flames were issuing from the flat with the entire first floor well alight. Newton Abbot, alongside Dawlish and Teignmouth used six BA (Breathing Apparatus), two hose reel jets and one attack jet to extinguish the fire.

‘The occupant of the flat did suffer some smoke inhalation, however they were discharged on scene after being assessed by our ambulance colleagues.

‘The other incidents that Newton were involved in primarily saw us assisting other agencies.

‘These callouts saw us providing support to crews in Plymouth with a 400 litre ethanol leak from a 250,000 litre tank with our EPU (Environmental Protection Unit).

‘The EPU also went to Plymouth for a second time to assist Police with an individual in distress. Whilst in Plymouth one of our appliances was also mobilised to assist the ambulance service for a medical incident.’
