Teign staff gathered with invited students and their families for our ‘Pride Through Success Awards’ for this academic year.
These ceremonies have evolved through the years due to the vision of the school’s driven pastoral team.
What began as year group celebrations has now moved to an annual event in which the school celebrates the fantastic achievements of the students within the wider community.
This year’s event was organised by Head of Year 9, Neil Cripps, supported by a team of dedicated Teign staff.
Mark Meleady from Tozers solicitors (who sponsor the event) began the proceedings with a speech about different journeys to success in life. This led on to the presentation of the awards.
The students nominated were young people for whom excellence, resilience and maximum effort are commonplace and who deserve to be recognised for their significant achievements.
More than 230 awards were presented covering a variety of categories. Academic excellence/effort across the curriculum was rewarded in the school subject awards.
Tutors also got the chance to recognise the students who made the most impact in their tutor groups and there were trophies for the School’s top readers in Years 7 and 8.
Heads of Year nominated students for special commendations for notable excellence in pursuits such as athletics, horse riding, water polo and BMX. The commendation award winners in Years 9 & 10 had the extra satisfaction of receiving the new School ‘colours’ tie embossed with the Teign School logo.
Some exceptional students received the ‘Contribution to Sports’(Charlie and Mae), ‘Performing Arts’ (Madi and Ellen) and ‘Outdoor Pursuits’ trophies; the latter was awarded to one of Teign’s Ten Tors Teams for helping another team in difficulty this year. The ‘Outstanding Contribution to School Life’ was then presented to worthy winner Harrison Payne from Year 10.
The culmination of the night was the presentation of Teign’s ‘Pride Through Success Award’ which was won by Zoe Ayling in Year 10.
This student is a role model to all around her and she participates fully in secondary school life as a member of the school council as well as taking on numerous other leadership roles within school and the wider community.
The evening was made extra special by the musical interludes provided by talented Year 10 Teign performers. Bobbie started the evening off by singing so beautifully and the Year 10 band (James and the two Charlies) gave us a rousing finish to the first half of the night.
Head Teacher, Suzannah Wharf said: ‘It was so wonderful to celebrate the success of our students with their families and staff. The atmosphere was fantastic and to have so many young people recognised made this a really positive event.
‘Well done Teign students.’
