YOUNGSTERS at Abbotskerswell Primary School were treated to visits by two artists to help create art from recycled materials.
Over two days, the children took part in workshops making 3D sculptures as part of the school’s arts week, inspired by the school tree logo.
The workshops were supported by Daisi, the arts inspired learning programme, and local charity the Helen Foundation.
Roger and Annie Kirk from the Helen Foundation came to visit to see the artists in action and were thrilled with what they saw.
Head teacher Kevin Martin said: ‘Through our curriculum offer we aim to provide a rich, varied and memorable curriculum, inspired by stimulating teaching that enables every child to make the progress they are capable of.
‘We want our children to develop a lifelong sense of purpose and curiosity in their learning.
‘We would like to say a huge thank you to teaching assistant Juliet Harper who has produced some very colourful boards with each class using bottle tops and to anyone who has helped during this time.
‘Many thanks to teacher Lisa Walsh for organising the week and thanks to the parents who gave up their time to come into school and help.’
Parents were able to go into the school to see the high quality of artwork produced by the children.
Artist Anna Boland led wire making workshops, creating a giant mobile to which each child contributed a piece.
These were based on the school logo of trees, nature and the environment, people and places.
Fellow artist Peter Margerum used recycled materials for sculpture workshops.
The sessions gave the youngsters the chance to learn new skills.
They went on to produce clay models and tiles and created nature pictures on the playground using bottle top caps and chalks.
