Welcome to Teignmouth, where the streets are paved with excrement...
All the visitors rushing into Teignmouth having visited the new Morrisons store will be delighted to find that they can enjoy the delights of the town centre poo dodge.
This is a sport unique to Teignmouth and there are three main participants in the game.
Firstly the feckless dog owners, lacking in any self respect, community spirit or common decency. they are the ones who under cover of darkness and before the town becomes busy set out with their incontinent pooches to lay the obstacles, defecating their way around the town taking special care to ensure they are performing at their best in shop entrances, pedestrian areas and outside schools.
Second, along come the delivery vehicles to ensure that the excrement is liberally smeared around the pavements and to cover as wide an area as possible.
Finally the visitors and residents have the challenge of making their way through the town.
The aim of the game is to go about your day without stepping on the 'mines' dragging them on your shoes into local businesses, homes and schools, not to mention the footwell of your car, or the floor of the bus or train as you leave the town, in the case of some never to return.
Fancy a game? No, I didn't think so. Nor would any much needed visitors to the town, local shoppers or business owners who are left to clean stinking excrement from their floors.
The town centre is struggling, we need all the business we can get, we need the town to be attractive and a pleasant place to wander around. what we don't need is visitors scraping their shoes clean before leaving never to return.
When is something going to be done about this? Recent campaigns have failed quite spectacularly. Yes, you can be fined but no one ever is. Yes there are bins available which the vast majority of responsible dog owners use, but how to deal with those that don't?
The town has recently installed CCTV – use it. Those caught allowing their dog to foul the area without cleaning it up should be fined, repeat offenders should have their dogs removed from their care.
There should be a hotline to report fouling as there is for rubbish and graffiti allowing the street cleaners to deal with it ASAP and we should name and shame the culprits.
Make the dog owners responsible before they destroy the little business we have completely. Other towns and cities worldwide seem to encourage their residents to pick it up why can't we?
What is it that makes those few Teignmouth dog owners so irresponsible?
I am a dog owner who picks it up.MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
