FIREFIGHTERS from Teignbridge attended a serious fuel spillage
in the South Hams this morning (Wednesday, February 17).
A crew from Buckfastleigh responded to the Avonwick area where there had been a significant diesel spillage from a tractor that had its fuel tank ruptured by a spike.
On arrival the officer in charge immediately requested the attendance of the Environment Agency, a fire service hazardous materials officer and the fire service Environmental Protection Unit from Newton Abbot.
Crews got to work preventing the diesel from contaminating the local watercourses and unfortunately had to close the main road for a period of time to prevent the spill from causing further danger to motorists.
The incident took approximately four hours to conclude and was left in the care of the Environment Agency.
