A LIFE-SAVING defibrillator has been installed at a popular Teignmouth boat launching area.

The initiative and main fundraising for the device came from the Teign Corinthian Yacht Club after the sudden death of one of its members at the spot.

Also backing the campaign are Teignbridge council and the Teign Estuary and Coastal Partnership.

Jane Cumbley whose husband David suffered a fatal heart attack at Polly Steps, said: ‘Several years ago the family was devastated by his loss during the annual craning.

‘Two years later we also lost his brother John in similar circumstances, but on a hockey pitch. We’ll never know if a defibrillator could have saved them, but this unit could give somebody that precious chance of life.’

With a clear line of sight from boats on the water and users of the car park, the new unit in its striking red cabinet is designed to be both highly visible and easily accessible.

Cllr Humphrey Clemens, Teignbridge’s portfolio holder for coastal management, said: ‘The coastal partnership was keen to help fund the installation of the new defibrillator unit at this main launching point, providing convenient access to emergency equipment for those on or around the water.

‘We are delighted to see this life-saving kit being unveiled, and while I hope no-one ever needs to use the device, it is reassuring to know it is is available if needed.’
