About 40 people, aged between 75 and 82, were in reminiscent mood in Teignmouth on Saturday.

As one, they were remembering the events of 70 years ago on September 2, l942.

That day, they were all in the town's primary school in Brook Hill when, just before 4pm, a German bomber dropped a stick of bombs which destroyed cottages on either side of the school.

Miraculously there was no direct hit on the school, attended by about 300 children, although people were killed in the cottages including the mother and sister of Miss Best, one of the teachers.
