A NEW community garden in Exminster is starting to take shape.

Volunteers have been working on the plot each Friday morning and are now beginning to see signs of spring.

The garden is in part of the St Martin’s Church allotment site alongside the churchyard.

The group is keen to hear from anyone interested in lending a hand.

One of the organisers Jeremy Pyne explained: ‘We’re there every Friday morning.

‘We’d be interested in any help whether that’s lending a hand, offering spare seed and plants suitable for a kitchen garden or even things like spare tools or ideas on creating a nice seating area.

‘We gave the allotment gate a bit of a makeover, added our new plot sign and planted some rhubarb.

‘It is exciting now spring is in the air.’

The garden, for food crops and flowers, is planned to be a ‘significant’ project for the village.

Jeremy added: ‘In time the ambition is to grow food and flowers to share and provide a safe and inclusive space for people to learn, spend time in the outdoors and get to know the process of gardening.’

It is also hoped to create a ‘calm and beautiful space’ for the community to enjoy.

Initially, Jeremy plans to have a small team to get the project started.

Then it will be open to anyone in the village for experienced gardeners to share knowledge and beginners to learn and explore the growing process.

The garden will be peat and chemical free, cutting out the use of pesticides and fertiliser.

As well as food and flowers, the project will aim to save water and create new habitats for wildlife.
