ONE of the biggest comedy box office hits of all time, that also pleased the critics, is the choice of the Teignmouth Film Society for its next screening.
The Odd Couple as well as being a comedy, has lots to say about male identity, and the pathos of failed relationships.
But the key enjoyment lies in the witty dialogue and perfect comic timing that are the irresistible double act of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
The pairing of Oscar (Matthau), the slob with a fridge full of not-quite-identifiable substances, with Felix (Lemmon), the archetypal control freak, obsessed with clearing his sinuses is comic genius.
Felix: ‘In other words, you’re throwin’ me out.’ Oscar: ‘Not in other words. Those are the perfect ones.’
Neil Simon was Oscar nominated for the screenplay which is based on his own Broadway stage hit of the same name.
It was released in 1968, but the comedy has not dated.
It will be shown at the Teignmouth Community School arts centre this Friday at 8pm, with doors opening at 7pm.
