YEAR 6 pupils at Chudleigh Knighton Primary School hosted a visit from local MP and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Mel Stride on Friday.

Organised by Headteacher Simon Westwood to follow on from the learning pupils had done about British values, which included the democratic process, Mr Stride spoke to pupils in Year 6 about his roles as an MP and cabinet minister, and answered questions on a range of subjects including farming and the environment.

Mr Stride said: ‘It was a pleasure to be back at Chudleigh Knighton Primary School and speak to such a well-behaved group of pupils about parliament, democracy and how each of us can influence decision-making through national and local government.’

Mr Westwood added: ‘Our Year 6 pupils learned about elections as part of topics on British values so for them to meet Mel and connect what they have been learning with real life was fantastic.’

Mel’s visit to Chudleigh Knighton Primary School was his second as an MP, having last visited in 2014.

Other primary schools he has visited include Hatherleigh, Ilsington, Bow, Bradninch and Chagford.
