A COUPLE are flushed with success after winning awards for the toilet facilities at their Dartmoor campsite. 

Alan and Debbie Howlett, who have run the small Oakmoor Touring Park near Chudleigh Knighton, are celebrating winning a clutch of awards.

Among the list of accolades is Most Improved Toilet facility in the UK 2023, awarded by the Loo Of The Year organisation. 

The previous year, competition inspectors checked out the facilities and suggested 22 improvements which could be made. 

Debbie and Allan sprung into action, implementing all the recommendations. 

Thanks to their hard work, they were rewarded with a large silver trophy presented by BBC’s Escape to the Country TV presenter, Jules Hudson. 

Loo of the Year has also awarded Oakmoor Touring Park with a Platinum Plus grade, an improvement on  Platinum the year before and Washroom Technician of the Year for the second year running for providing the highest levels of cleanliness.

It has also been awarded with the Period Dignity Award which is given to facilities that provide a safe and hygienic place for people who menstruate.

Oakmoor provides touch-free, hygienic, in-cubicle sanitary bins and free period products.

Allan said: ‘My wife and I are proud to say that although we are a small site and it is only the two of us running it, we won the most improved toilet facility in the UK and also were voted in the Top 100 campsites earning a fourth place in the UK for places to camp in tents.

‘Both of these awards were given for our performance in 2023 which was only our fifth year of running a campsite.’

After just five seasons, they have been listed in the Top 100 Sites guide for the UK which recognises the best sites in the UK.

They also came fourth in the sub category for camping and tents; this award was even more meaningful to Debbie and Allan as it was voted for by the guests that stay on their site.

They also won Best Caravan Park South West runner-up for 2023 for the second year in a row.

Oakmoor was also a winner in the Pitch Up Review Awards 2023, getting an average of 9.8 out of 10 from more than 130 reviews thus having a 98per cent approval rating.
