A NEWTON Abbot-based film and theatre company has beaten off some cultural heavyweights in a county-wide business competition.
Wandering Tiger won the arts category at this year’s Exeter Living Awards on April 6.
The second annual awards – at Exeter University’s Great Hall – are a celebration of businesses in Exeter and the surrounding area.
Competitors in the same category included the Northcott Theatre, Exeter Phoenix and the Bike Shed theatre.
Wandering Tiger was established by local writer and director Luke Jeffery in 2006, expanding into a fully-fledged production company producing original content for stage and screen.
Luke, who thanked all those who had helped Wandering Tiger gain the accolade, said afterwards: ‘The support we’ve received from local people and businesses has been absolutely fantastic. We can’t wait to get started on the next project.’
Last year the company produced its most ambitious project to date – Hell’s Bells, a short film about the dark underbelly of Morris dancing.
It was funded by Creative England and the BFI NET.WORK as part of their iShorts scheme.
Hell’s Bells received comparisons with the acclaimed TV series Black Mirror.
The ‘short’ is currently being submitted to film festivals with more screenings scheduled later this year.
Luke revealed he has plans to shoot a feature length film next – and a theatre project is also on the go.
