MUSE superstar Matt Bellamy made an off-the-cuff trip to check out the major damage at storm-ravaged Teignmouth Grand Pier.

He and the other band members used to frequent the pier in their schooldays like thousands of other youngsters and have fond memories of the 150-year-old structure.

It has stood up to the many batterings by the sea over the years, but suffered severe damage in last week's unprecedented onslaught.

Matt surveyed the destruction on Monday with Nik Brenner, 41, and his family who run the pier, and was moved by just how bad it was.
