A POPULAR art show that raises funds for a rural primary school will be welcoming guests for its 20th year later this month.

The Doddiscombsleigh Art Show exhibits a range of works by well-known artists and homegrown talent from the surrounding Teign Valley area.

The event is organised entirely by volunteers, including staff and parents from the school. In 2019 the show raised more than twenty-two thousand pounds. Funds raised by the event over the years have enabled the renovation of play areas, the purchase of computer equipment, theatre trips and lessons for budding musicians.

One local artist who’s been invited back to exhibit her work is the Teign Valley’s Lucy Smerdon, whose work draws inspiration from the local landscape.

Lucy said: ‘I’m delighted to be exhibiting at the show again, it’s always great to see what other local artists are doing. ‘I’m keen to find ways in which other artists reduce their impact on the environment, as it’s something I’m currently trying to minimise myself.’

Lucy added: ‘My paintings are an expression of my love of being out amongst the trees and listening to the birds. I hope I can bring some of this joy into people’s homes through my art.’

Claire Cook, chair of the art show committee, said: ‘After a prolonged absence due to the pandemic, this year’s show is set to come roaring back.

‘We have a wonderful mixture of talent exhibiting with us this year; many familiar artists including Suzie Marsh, Penelope Timmis, Rebecca de Mendonca and Lucy Smerdon to name just a few.’

Alongside the galleries, a gift shop stocked with locally produced goods and craft items for Christmas will be on hand. Those browsing can also enjoy a cafe offering lunches, cakes and cream teas.
