RUSH-HOUR traffic heading out of Newton Abbot expected long delays on the A380 after a bus caught fire, late this afternoon (Feb 5).
Emergency services responded to the 999 shout involving a bus carrying school children on the Exeter-bound carriageway near the Ashcombe turn-off.
Police said all children on the bus heading towards Exeter were safely evacuated from the vehicle and put on another to continue their journey home.
Three fire crews dealt with the incident after 999 calls were received just before 4.30pm.
A spokeswoman said smoke was seen coming from the back of the school vehicle. No one was hurt in the ordeal.
She added that the engine compartment was well alight when crews arrived.
Crews are still at the scene at 5pm.
Drivers are being asked to reduce their speed and drive with caution until the area is secure.
One lane is expected to be closed for some time.
